When someone accuses prep style of being uninspired, monolithic, or cliche, I just want to grab them by the ear and show them a picture like this. Ladies and gentlemen: privileged kids who raid Ralph Lauren and J Crew not for their sartorial value but for the labels are ruining the face of a whole, wonderful range of style. Like with any aesthetic, preppy wear is only as good as you make it. And this shot makes it well. A well cropped blazer, perfectly proportioned tie, and standout shirt make this look a far cry from what I imagine 99% of “prep haters” see when they think prep style. I’m not here to defend “preppiness” (whatever that means); I’m only here to point out what looks good. And, in my humble opinion, this looks damned good.

I used to hate pants like this. I thought embroidered patterns were cheesy and distracted from a good, streamlined pair of slacks. Now I think otherwise; they add a great deal of swag and a hint of prep sophistication. They’re like pants with built in accessories. I would look for a pair if I thought I had the panache to pull them off.

I’m going to a derby-style horse race next weekend and everyone there will be outrageously preppy—wearing brightly colored pants with navy blazers and sipping gin cocktails. At least that’s the way it’s playing out in my mind. Regardless, I’m putting the above look together for that event. Hopefully by then I’ll have my red chinos to pair with this awesome seersucker bow tie and slim blazer.
